My name is Kim Black, everyone in Burlington, NC knows me as “Miss Kim”. I think I have one of the most rewarding jobs there is – I’m a Ballerina Maker: I turn little girls into ballerinas! In addition to teaching little ones to dance at Burlington Dance Center, I also coach an award winning middle school dance team! You can read more on my blog.
My approach to teaching is through imagination. I love creating stories, and watching children fall in love with learning to dance. Using imagination, I can take a rowdy class of 3 to 5 year olds, grab their attention with my stories – it won’t be long before they start learning, walking in lines, forming circles, and doing basic tap and ballet movements, and they don’t even know it! The parents are usually amazed when their daughter (or son) leaves class with new confidence, a sign that they had a great time and learned some dance too! The best compliment I can receive as a teacher is when I’m hugging a little dancer goodbye, giving her a sticker, and she asks: “Can I come back and play?”
I started dancing at the age of 11. I have been teaching tap, ballet, and jazz since I was 16. I prefer teaching young dancers the most. I continued teaching while attending East Carolina University and taking dance classes. I have taken master classes all over the east coast.
My four wonderful children have helped me relate to preschool youngsters. Teaching is the ultimate profession for me, I love it! I get all the “I love you’s, hugs, kisses, and “Miss Kim you are the best”……what other job could give me that?
I think I make a difference when I see a little one smile as they leave.
I finally decided I was going to fulfill my dream of making my very own children’s DVD. My vision was to create a short DVD that children, and their parents, would love. I wanted to create something that would engage their imagination with stories and activities like my young dance students love so much . I really love the DVD and I know that you, and the children in your life, will love it too.
As a mother I’m always concerned about what young children watch on TV as well as the movies or DVDs they watch. This DVD was created by a mother of four children and contains only positive, wholesome, and fun content – there nothing to worry about any age level watching.
My first DVD is titled “Pretend with Miss Kim” and is for children 18 months to 5 years old.
